Planning Your Move: A Friendly Guide to Starting Your Next Chapter
Moving is an exciting prospect, if not a little overwhelming at times. That’s normal. Luckily, we’re here to help.
We’ve walked alongside many future residents and their families through this exact process. And while every journey looks different, a little planning can go a long way in making the move smooth, simple, and yes, truly exciting.
Here’s a guide to help you get started.
Step 1: Start with a timeline — not a stopwatch
Give yourself the gift of time. Most people feel better when they’re not rushing through big decisions.
Here’s a general timeline you can use as a guide:
3–6 Months Before the Move
- Start touring communities (if you haven’t already!)
- Get a sense of what feels like a good fit
- Talk with family, friends, or your support team about what’s important to you
2–3 Months Before
- Make your decision and reserve your apartment
- Create a moving checklist (we can help!)
- Start organizing what to bring, what to donate, what to gift
1 Month Before
- Schedule your move
- Notify your post office, doctor, and anyone else who needs your new address
- Start packing little by little
1 Week Before
- Confirm your move-in date
- Pack a “first night” box with essentials (think: toothbrush, comfy clothes, coffee mug)
- Take a deep breath — you’re almost there
Step 2: Use checklists (so you don’t have to keep everything in your head)
There’s a reason we love checklists around here. They take the pressure off your memory and help you feel a little more in control. Here’s a simple one to get you started:
Packing Checklist
- Favorite clothes and shoes
- Medications and toiletries
- Personal documents
- Photos, keepsakes, and décor that will make your new space feel like you
- Small furniture items that fit your new floorplan
- A cozy throw, books, and whatever brings you comfort
Need a more detailed list? We’ve got one ready for you — just ask.
Step 3: Give yourself (and your feelings) some grace
Even when it’s the right move, change can stir up emotions. That’s OK. You’re not leaving your life behind — you’re bringing it with you, just in a new setting. One with less to worry about, more opportunities to connect, and a team that’s here to help every step of the way.
Final thought: It’s not just a move — it’s a fresh start
Moving to Carlton Concord isn’t about “downsizing.” It’s about right-sizing — shaping your life around what matters most.
We’ll be here with a warm welcome, a helping hand, and maybe even a cup of coffee to toast this new chapter. Let’s make it a good one.
